Golden retrievers have become shorthand for a certain kind of person: relentlessly friendly, emotionally available, delighted by minor pleasures, and constitutionally incapable of believing anyone might have bad intentions. We know this type of person. They greet strangers at parties like they’ve been waiting all week for them to arrive. They say “we should totally do this again” and actually mean it. They would probably offer a home intruder a stuffed animal before asking why he was climbing through the upstairs window.
Which is exactly what Nash did.

While his owners, Dante Rowley and Stephanie Calderon, were boarding a flight home from Chicago, they received a security alert showing a man entering their San Diego house. Nash had one job, theoretically: bark, growl, make the guy reconsider his choices. Instead, he repeatedly approached the intruder with toys, tail wagging, apparently thrilled that the family had finally hired him a daytime playmate.

The intruder helped himself to yogurt, removed his shoes and shirt, and even took a nap. Police arrived minutes later, and Nash greeted them with precisely the same energy, because Nash does not discriminate. If you walk into his home, legally or otherwise, congratulations: you are now part of the fun

The suspect was arrested after trying to escape through a bathroom window. Nash, meanwhile, remains innocent of every concept involved in the word “burglary.”

He may be a terrible watchdog. But to us, he's the new ambassador of being aggressively, irrationally happy to meet everyone. A golden retriever, if I ever saw one!
